A sixteen year old girl, identified as Evelyn Namasopo has given a detailed narrative of her experience in the hands of a rapist. According to her, he proceeded to chop off her hand after she struggled with him.
Evelyn Namasopo is a high school student in Bududa district, Uganda. She narrated her ordeal to the Mbale chief magistrate, Mr. James Mawanda in a meeting at the bubulo magistrate court in manafwa district on Wednesday, Apri 7th, 2021.
Evelyn told the court, the suspect identified as Derrick kuloba, aged twenty-five, attacked her near a forest on her way home to get food for her sick mother, who was recently admitted in the hospital.
She further went on to say “Kuloba ordered her to undress which she refused. He proceeded to cut her in several places after she refused to give in. “He wanted to cut off my head but I guarded it with my right hand”.
“I cried out for help but it was all in vain”. Evelyn said she is still having pains in several parts of her body. Evelyn said the mbale court and the Ugandan police are trying to push her case aside instead of granting her justice.
“I need justice from this court because I’m now disabled. I’m not able to do my day to day activities like before. The things I was able to do, I can’t do them now. I can’t even write again” – Evelyn.
Prosecution presented three witnesses who testified to her having several injuries in different parts of her body.
They also told court that kuloba, who is a native of Nabooti village, Nakatsi sub country in bududa district had attempted to harm evelyn with a machete and also tried to rape her on the 4th of july, 2020.
Evelyn sustained several injuries on various parts of her body which were both permanent and gruesome. In her testimony, she asked that the court give a harsh punishment to kuloba.
The case was further adjourned to April 8, 2021 with more witnesses to be presented by the prosecution.
Her mother whose name is Mrs Juliet Khainza said “We had waited for this case to start but it has all being in vain, I want my daughter to get adequate justice”.
Evelyn’s mother also asked that the suspect will have to settle all the medical bills for her daughter to get well, pending when judgment will be passed.
She made the appeal saying that her famiy cannot foot the bills.
